VFD commissioning step by step
A vendor-neutral commissioning sequence for frequency inverters: checks before power-up, motor data, control source, ramps and limits, auto-tuning, I/O and fieldbus, test run and documentation.
Every manufacturer names parameters differently, but commissioning a frequency inverter follows the same sequence. Use the drive's quick-commissioning menu or wizard where available, and keep the manual open for parameter numbers.
1. Before power-up
- Drive rating matches motor current (heavy/normal duty) and supply voltage.
- Motor cable: shielded, correct length (check the limit and the need for output reactor/filter), shield terminated at both ends with 360° clamps.
- Insulation test of the motor with the drive disconnected.
- Safe Torque Off (STO) inputs wired as designed; brake resistor connected if needed.
2. Motor data
Enter nameplate data: rated voltage, current, frequency, speed, power, cos φ, connection (star/delta must match the voltage). Wrong motor data is the root cause of many overcurrent and overload trips.
3. Control mode and source
- Control method: V/f for pumps/fans and multi-motor, sensorless vector for most machines, closed loop with encoder for high torque at zero speed.
- Command source (terminals, keypad, fieldbus) and setpoint source (analog input, preset, fieldbus).
4. Limits and ramps
Minimum/maximum frequency, acceleration/deceleration times (long enough for the load inertia, or with braking), current limit, stop mode (ramp/coast), motor thermal protection.
5. Identification (auto-tuning)
Static identification is possible with the load connected; rotating identification gives better vector control results but requires the motor to be free to turn. Check direction of rotation first in jog.
6. I/O and fieldbus
Configure digital inputs (run, direction, reset), relay outputs (fault, ready, running), analog input range (0–10 V / 4–20 mA, with fault on wire break). For fieldbus: control word/status word, setpoint scaling (often 16384 or 4000h = 100 %), communication-loss reaction.
7. Test run and handover
Run unloaded, then with load across the speed range; watch current, DC-link voltage and temperatures. Back up the parameter set (keypad memory, PC tool) and attach it to the documentation.
