SCADA platforms — the landscape and the old names

Map of widely used SCADA/HMI platforms with their former names (Wonderware, Citect, Intellution, RSView…), licensing and architecture differences, and what to check when choosing.

SCADA products are renamed with every acquisition, so engineers meet the same software under several names. This table maps current names to the ones you will still find in plants and documents.

Architectural differences that matter

  • Tag-based vs object-based: InTouch, iFIX, classic WinCC define tags per screen/application; System Platform, WinCC OA, zenon, Ignition (UDTs) and MasterSCADA build plant object models with templates — easier to scale.
  • Licensing: per tag/IO count (most classic products), per server with unlimited tags/clients (Ignition), runtime per node (MasterSCADA, TRACE MODE).
  • Clients: thick Windows clients vs HTML5/web clients (Ignition Perspective, WinCC Unified, zenon HTML5, AVEVA OMI web).
  • Redundancy & distribution: server pairs, distributed I/O servers (Plant SCADA clusters), gateway networks (Ignition).
  • Drivers: built-in (Ignition, zenon, Plant SCADA) or via OPC servers.

Choosing questions

  1. Which controllers and protocols must be supported natively?
  2. Expected tag count, clients and sites in 10 years — and licensing cost at that size.
  3. Redundancy, historian and alarm-management requirements.
  4. Who maintains it locally; availability of integrators and training.
  5. Operating system and security requirements (patching, domain integration, certificates).
