PROFINET diagnostics and typical faults

Device and network diagnostics in PROFINET: alarms, LEDs, topology via LLDP, SNMP counters, MRP ring redundancy and a field checklist.

Levels of diagnostics

  1. Device diagnostics — IO devices send diagnostic alarms (wire break, short circuit, module pulled) to the controller with channel and error type; the PLC shows them in the diagnostic buffer and online views.
  2. Communication status — LEDs: typically BF (bus fault: no connection to the controller) and SF (group/system fault) on Siemens devices; other vendors use similar link/activity and status LEDs.
  3. Network diagnostics (CC-B and higher) — every device reports its neighbours via LLDP, so the engineering tool can compare the real topology with the configured one; SNMP gives port counters (errors, discards, link speed).

Ring redundancy (MRP)

The Media Redundancy Protocol closes a line of devices into a ring. One ring manager blocks one port; when a cable breaks it opens the port and traffic flows the other way, with reconfiguration in the range of hundreds of milliseconds (depending on the MRP profile). Every device in the ring must support MRP and have it enabled.

Field checklist

CheckWhy
Device name and IP uniqueDuplicates stop startup
Link LEDs on both ends, 100 Mbit/s full duplexAuto-negotiation problems cause errors under load
Cable type and connectors (industrial Cat5e/Cat6, shield connected)Interference shows as CRC errors in port counters
Topology matches configurationWrong port used after maintenance
Line depth (devices in series)Each device adds forwarding delay; respect update time limits
Network load from non-RT trafficCameras or file transfers on the same switches can delay RT frames
Firmware and GSDML version matchMismatched descriptions cause module errors

Free tools such as PRONETA (Siemens) or vendor topology views help to find devices with no or wrong names.
